Anotace:

Student will gain knowledge about electromagnetic waves, its propagation in free space and behavior at boundaries of different mediums (both isotropic and anisotropic). Furthermore, propagation in waveguides (metal and dielectric), radiation and radio communication links will be treated. Basic technical application are going to be discussed as well, mainly related to impedance matching.

 1 Waves at boundary of two mediums, Snell's law, Fresnel equations 2 Total reflection, evanescent waves, Brewster polarization angle 3 Transmission of waves through layered mediums, quarter-wave transformer 4 Waves in anisotropic medium and at its boundary 5 Metallic waveguide of arbitrary cross-section, guided and evanescent waves 6 Rectangular and circular metallic waveguide 7 Planar waveguides (microstrip line, slot line), dielectric waveguides, resonators 8 Scattering and impedance parameters, matrix description of circuits with distributed parameters 9 Impedance matching, effects of impedance mismatch, standing waves, impedance transformation by transmission line, Smith chart 10 Impedance matching (by using LC lumped elements and transmission lines and their combinations) 11 Introduction to numerical methods in electromagnetics (FDFD, FDTD) 12 Retarded potentials, Green's function, sources of waves 13 Elementary electric dipole and linear antenna of finite length, basic antenna parameters 14 Equation for radio-transmission link (Friis equation)
