Message from the Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Czech Technical University (FEE CTU).

CTU (founded in 1707) is the leading technical university in the Czech Republic. In 1960, the Department of Electrical Engineering became an independent faculty. Our 17 departments are located in two buildings: Dejvice (in the main CTU campus) and Karlovo namesti, both within the center of Prague.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FEE) offers first-class education in the fields of electrical engineering, telecommunications, automation, informatics and computer science and engineering. All our study programmes are closely linked to our research activities.

The FEE alone ranks among the top 5 research institutions in the Czech Republic. We generate about 30% of the research output of the whole CTU.

We have extensive research collaboration with top universities and research institutions worldwide. We offer innovative solutions to our industrial partners, military and security institutions. We participate in space research programmes and work for governmental agencies.

The faculty offers the following study programmes taught in English:

  • Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering and Management (BSc and Ing.)
  • Communications, Multimedia and Electronics (BSc and Ing.)
  • Cybernetics and Robotics (BSc and Ing.)
  • Open Informatics (BSc and Ing.)
  • Biomedical Engineering and Informatics (Ing. only)
  • PhD programme divided into 16 branches of study

Our graduates find top jobs in industry, research institutions, and at universities in the Czech Republic and worldwide.

Since 1950, FEE has awarded more than 30 000 diplomas which were always considered the benchmark of quality.

For the future, we strive to become the leading center of research and innovation through our even more internationalized academic staff and student body.

Dear colleagues,

After I have been elected by the Academic Senate, the rector appointed me as the dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2015.

I will do my best to perform this function to the benefit of our school. Should you have any objections or comments to my activities, please, do not hesitate to tell me so.

Above all, I would like to thank the previous Dean Professor Šimák for everything he did and will do for our school in the future. I will try to continue in the progressive projects he started. The time, when he was in the position of the dean, was not easy. I would also like to thank deputy dean professor Starý who did a wonderful job as an acting dean during the month of June. I hope that the changes in the positions will be carried out smoothly.

  1. I will base my activities on my manifesto which will become - after discussing it with the Academic Senate - the core of my proposal for the long-term strategic plan of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
  2. As you know, the Scientific Council of the Faculty has finished its mandate on June 30, 2011. Today, I have appointed members of the Search Committee (professors Mařík, Sovka, Šebek, Škvor) which will submit its proposal of the composition of the new Scientific Council at the beginning of August. My goal is to hold the elections of new members of the Scientific Council at the nearest meeting of the Academic Senate. The first meeting of the new Council could then take place by the beginning of October.
  3. Today, I have also appointed professor Hlaváč as the head of the Dislocation Committee. The task of the committee is to propose a transparent system of managing the space/areas within our school. Upon its approval, the committee should also bring it forward. As part of this system, I envisage public awareness of the use of particular rooms. If there is to be a system of financial settlement for space used, this system should start already for 2012. The school acquired new space in the Technical "Menza". Following the results of the consultations with the Dislocation Committee in this matter, I would like to offer this space for example to new temporary project teams. It is also necessary to analyze the utilization of the two lecture halls we have there.
  4. Today, for the first time, I took part in the meeting of the steering committee for the Center of energy efficient buildings in Kladno . The project has been signed by the Minister and preparatory works on the construction of the buildings are on the way. Unfortunately, all of this is substantially delayed.
  5. I started to deal with the future of teaching in Trutnov. I will ask the Academic Senate to help me with solution of this problem. It is important to analyze the commitments of our school, to assess the risks and act promptly.
  6. During the summer holidays I would like to release a comprehensive organizational chart of the faculty. I would like to publish the job descriptions and substitution procedures of the employees within the dean.s office and non-departmental bodies. I would like to thank those units (as SVTI and VVZS) that have already produced this overview. Besides producing this description, the heads of all units were asked to prepare plans of their activities and future development.
  7. During the summer holidays, work on process mapping will continue, including links to relevant documents and concrete employees. This work is a good opportunity for rationalization of administrative processes. I would like to ask all employees to help with this task.
  8. I take as granted that all documents within our school will be shared electronically (with hard copy in those cases where written rules require). Minutes of the meetings and sessions will be produced, confirmed and published on the web within three working days. Such administrative standards will be ratified in a decree that I plan to issue at the beginning of the up-coming semester.
  9. I would like the faculty to be a friendly environment, I would like us not only to be proud to study or work at our faculty but to happily enter all its buildings. This can be maintained even through seemingly minor improvements, I will be grateful for your suggestions especially for those which will be budget-neutral. My initial contribution in this direction is abolishment of the ban on presence of small children at the graduation ceremonies. Even much older institutions already understand that small children do not undermine the dignity of their ceremonies.
  10. As I promised, today I have handed over my duties as the head of the Department of Measurement to professor Haasz. I am making steps towards opening a competition for the new head of the department.

Finally, let me thank all the academic staff and other employees of the faculty for their work. The up-coming holidays are not only a time for rest and recovery but also the period of intense work on preparation of the courses and scientific and industrial projects. I hope you will have an opportunity to perform some of this work by the water and not only in our sweaty buildings. My special acknowledgement goes to those teachers who will give consultations and exams during the holidays.

I would also like to thank students for their good results. This year saw the first graduates of the new study programs and considerable number of the diplomas was with distinction. We should find new ways to support, emphasize, and acknowledge the excellence of students.

Praha, July 1, 2011
