Hattrick in publishing is won by the team of Daniel Sýkora

Three scientific papers written by doc. Daniel Sýkora from the Department of Computer Graphics and Interaction of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague, were accepted to SIGGRAPH 2017, the most prestigious computer graphics conference.

SIGGRAPH will be held from 30 July to 3 August in Los Angeles. It is the largest and most influential conference and exhibition in the field of computer graphics and interactive techniques.Papers by doc. Sýkora´s team were accepted into main section of the Technical Papers program. The contributions are focused on the robust localization of symmetry in the image, the synthesis of hand-drawn animations and the stylization of faces according to the given artwork. For example, the Nautilus system will be introduced at the SIGGRAPH 2017 conference. It automatically detects and locates complex symmetry in any image, even if it is subject to perspective distortion. The localization makes it possible to perform non-trivial edits for previously complicated user interactions.

Another contribution is devoted to the expressive animation of rigid 2D bodies, an algorithm for transferring the traditional cartoon style from a few hand-made examples to a more complex physical simulation involving, for example, several interacting solid bodies. The method saves a significant portion of the constantly repetitive work the animator would otherwise have to spend in preserving the unique style of animation.   Thirdly, an article on the synthesis of stylized facial animation was accepted to the conference. Here, the system can faithfully translate the art style from an existing hand-painted portrait into a real human face video. The technique can preserve both the identity of the subject and the visual richness of the model painting. In addition, it allows you to control the visual dynamics of the image over time, and thus bring it closer to the look of otherwise very laborious thorough animation where each frame is hand - drawn separately.
