Abstract:
The vast majority of the work done in the field of quality assessment during last two decades has been dedicated to the quantification of the distortion caused by the processing of an image. The original image was, therefore, always considered to be of the best possible quality. In this kind of scenario, the notion of quality can be expressed as the fidelity of the processed version to the reference. However, some post-processing algorithms enable to adjust aesthetic properties of an image in order to enhance the perceived quality. In such cases, the best possible quality image is not available and the classical fidelity approach is no longer applicable. The goal of this thesis is to revise the quality assessment methodologies to cope with the challenges brought by the post-processing into the quality evaluation. The post-processing algorithms, relevant to the topic of this thesis, come from two groups – image enhancement, represented by image sharpening, and dynamic range compression (also known as tone-mapping) techniques. Both subjective and objective quality assessment methodologies applicable in these areas are studied and the suitable solutions, outperforming the state-of-the-art methods, are proposed. Moreover, a novel methodology for evaluating the performance of objective quality metrics, overcoming the shortcomings of the currently available methods, is presented.

dizertační práce / PhD thesis: Jan Hrnčíř, MSc., Ph.D.: Models and Algorithms for Sustainable Journey Planning
školitel / supervisor: doc. Ing. Michal Jakob, Ph.D., katedra počitačů / Department of Computer Science

Abstract:
The thesis focuses on models and algorithms for journey planning for sustainable transport, i.e., planning journeys from an origin to a destination that respect user preferences and utilise sustainable modes of transport. Our motivation is to provide people with intelligent tools that would help them discover routes that best suit their transport needs and, consequently, to facilitate the much needed shift towards sustainable mobility. In order to achieve our objectives, we rst de ne formal models that enable us to e ciently represent transport networks. On top of these network models, we then develop e cient algorithms that solve three important sustainable journey planning problems. Speci cally, we solve the problems of multi-criteria bicycle routing, intermodal journey planning, and ridesharing on timetabled transport services. We evaluate our implemented algorithms using real-world data. We then integrate our algorithms into prototype journey planning systems and validate them in real-world eld trials with thousands of users in total. Finally, based on our practical experience with the real-world deployment, we discuss key aspects of engineering realworld journey planning systems, including the quality assurance in journey planning and the e cient implementation of journey planning algorithms.

Abstract:
This thesis is focused on the design of novel methods for underactuated walking robot control in a way resembling a human walk. The methods are based on partially linear form of Acrobot as the representative of a class of underactuated walking robots. Indeed, Acrobot is the simplest underactuated walking robot theoretically able to walk. Later on, a general method is proposed enabling to extend directly results for Acrobot to any general planar n-link chain underactuated at its pivot point. This technique is referred to as the so-called generalized Acrobot embedding. By virtue of the partial linearization property it is possible to transform the original nonlinear representation of Acrobot into its partially linear form having a one-dimensional nonlinear component only. The newly obtained results include design methods for Acrobot walking, i.e. state feedback controllers, observers and planning of walking-like reference trajectories to be tracked. To be more specific, state feedback controllers are based on the knowledge of time varying entries resulting from approximate linearization of the mentioned nonlinear component along selected Acrobot walking-like reference trajectory. In one particular case of the controller design only bounds of these time varying entries are taken into the account. Alternatively, information about time varying entries including time derivative of the entries up to the order four is used. As already noted, reference trajectory design methods belong to the thesis original results as well. To accommodate the impact effect, the developed reference trajectory is also using the idea that the angular velocities at the end of the previous step and at the beginning of the next step have to be in a ratio determined by the impact properties. Next, due to the absence of the actuator at the pivot point, it is not easy to directly measure all states of Acrobot. Therefore, two algorithms to observe unmeasurable states of Acrobot were developed here based on particular knowledge of angular positions and velocities. Finally, due to its simple geometry, Acrobot is able to walk only theoretically, as it would always hit the ground by its swing leg. Therefore, the results developed for Acrobot are extended to the so-called 4-link using the above mentioned embedding method. As a matter of fact, 4-link may serve as a reasonable model of pair of legs with knees thereby providing a more realistic walking model, though without a torso.

Abstract:
The thesis develops a novel approach, the so-called travelling-wave approach, for the analysis and control of a linear multi-agent system. The approach takes advantage of the wave-like behaviour of a multi-agent system by decomposing the outputs of the agents into two waves travelling through the system in opposite directions. The main advantage of the approach is that it splits the bidirectional interactions between the agents into two non-interacting waves. This allows us to study the interactions between two neighbouring agents without the necessity to consider the e ect of other agents in the system. Such a local analysis then allows us to infer system properties, such as the string stability of even a large scale system, which is di cult to carry out with the traditional approaches. Another bene t of the travelling-wave approach is that it allows us to design a feedback controller, which signi cantly shortens the transient of the system.
The most challenging issue of the approach is that it employs irrational transfer functions, which are less mathematically studied than rational transfer functions. For instance, even the current state-of-the-art programs are not able to carry out the inverse Laplace transform of an irrational transfer function. Therefore, a part of the thesis focuses on the development of algorithms for the rational approximation of irrational transfer functions. The programs carrying out the approximation are published online on the webpage of Matlab Central and have already been downloaded by dozens of users.
