The subject discusses principles of the telecommunication systems both digital transmission systems and digital switching systems. The subject will allow students to gain overview in broad telecommunication domain and they will be able to solve partial problems related with network traffic. Furthermore, students will also obtain knowledge in VoIP technology, QoS and signaling systems that are used in modern wired and wireless networks.

Study targets:

Students are acquainted with the principle function of selected technologies of telecommunications technology.

Course outlines:

1. Telephone channel, voice signal processing, Frame E1.
2. Backbone transmission systems and networks.
3. PDH, SDH, OTH transmission systems.
4. Architecture of digital switching systems, subscribers lines, ISDN.
5. Switching networks type S and T, signaling.
6. Synchronisation in networks, distribution of clocks in networks, creation of slips.
7. Next generation network (NGN).
8. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), TCP/IP networks.
9. Technology VoIP. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). Quality of service (QoS).
10. Generation of mobile networks.
11. Basic principles of communication and signaling in mobile networks.
12. Access networks, types and features.
13. Digital Subscribe Line (xDSL) systems and their applications.
14. Wireless access networks.

Exercises outline:

1. Introduction. Content of practices. Requirements to obtain the credit.
2. Counting with logarithms and description of transmission chains (I).
3. Counting with logarithms and description of transmission chains (II). Assignment of seminar projects.
4. Lab. task 1 (Configuration of interconnection and synchronisation in network).
5. Lab. task 2 (Measurement on PBX).
6. Lab. task 3 (Analyses of subscriber line).
7. Lab. task 4 (Analyses of TCP/IP protocols).
8. Lab. task 5 (Voice over IP networks).
9. Network simulators used in telecommunication networks (I).
10. Network simulators used in telecommunication networks (II).
11. Presentation of seminar projects, check of elaborated tasks (I).
12. Presentation of seminar projects, check of elaborated tasks (II).
13. Excursion into Research and Development Centre (RDC).
